Arguably the most crucial part of the gallery system is the upload system. A cumbersome and slow upload system deters people from uploading new images.

Certainly, the current Gallery doesn't make it very easy to upload multiple images and filling out the meta data such as caption, etc is a chore. We've had a lot of feedback over the years...
